A few months ago the police chief in Bargersville of Indiana pushed to start electrifying his fleet and he did this by replacing some of the aging Dodge Chargers with slightly more expensive ($41,000) Tesla Model 3’s, which he said were the best car in the price range and that they would pay for themselves within their six year lifetime that Police vehicles generally are kept.
“Two big things that we were looking at when shopping for cars were obviously cost and performance. Many times when you get a car that is in our cost price range, you sacrifice performance. With Tesla, the performance is better than the cars we are currently driving. It’s amazing, it’s smooth, it’s powerful, it handles great.” Another reason offered by the chief, Todd Bertram, for his choice.
However now it seems that his choice was even smarter than expected as the cars are set to pay for themselves in only 19 months.
Better. I think the break even point will be more like 19 months rather than 24 like we planned before— Todd Bertram (@ToddBertram1) June 29, 2020
The cars were expected to save the department around $6,000 a year each on fuel consumption but the maintenance costs were still a guess, however now that the cars have been worked on for the past few months, it has exceeding expectations by the department.
If this works out, we will soon see a lot of police departments in America looking to save costs and moving to the Tesla 3.
How do you feel about this, let me know in the comments.
